Creating our own Wooden Resources

Jennie and Jess enjoyed teaming up with fellow nursery owner Amy Parfitt from Oldfield and Midford Road nurseries, to create some handmade wooden resources for the nursery completely from scratch.

We used some woodcut off’s kindly gifted to us by Charlton’s wood in Radstock so these resources cost us absolutely nothing to make!

We love the wooden resources that Myriad sells, but these can be very expensive, so we thought we would have a go ourselves.

We wanted to make the resources as loose as possible, so that they could be deconstructed and put back together by the children and used for many different things, as well as small world play. We made simple sketches on the wood of basic shapes that could connect together easily.

Jennie started with a tree and Jess a cave. We then got stuck in using the woodcutter to cut out our shapes. This was pretty tricky at first but we soon worked out that the simpler the shape the easier this is.  Once we got going we were away! Once cut, we used an electronic sander to smooth our edges and give our wood a nice texture for the children when they are playing with them.

In just 3 hours we managed to create a tree, cave, heart, whale, fish and several blockhouses and roofs!

We stopped off on the way home to hobby craft and bought some acrylic paint to paint our blocks but they would also be beautiful natural.

We think you will agree these are a really beautiful addition to our nursery and we like to think that they are that bit more special as they were made for us by us.

We hope the children will enjoy playing with them as much as we enjoyed making them!
